The best seat in town is a deck.
As the cliffs turn gold, the catamarans slip out of the marina for a slow loop of the coast, drinks poured and the sun going down over the Atlantic. Some run on to dinner and a swim off the back. All of them beat a table on the strip.
Get properly wet.
A kayak or paddleboard slips into the coves and grottoes the big boats can only pass, and from sea level the cliffs are a different coast. Want speed instead? A jet ski safari or a parasail lift sorts that out. These are the ones worth getting salty for.
There is a country behind the beach.
A few minutes inland the resort noise fades to vineyards, orange groves and stone villages. Book a winery afternoon with tapas, a tuk-tuk loop of the Old Town, or a long lunch matched to local wine. These are the trips that make the coast make sense.
Silves was the Moorish capital.
Long before the beach resorts there was Silves, its red sandstone castle still standing above an orange-grove river. Push on and Monchique climbs into cool green hills with a spa town and a firewater worth trying. It is the calmest, oldest day this coast has to offer.
