Every Albufeira day, reviewed.

Boat trips out to the Benagil caves, jeep safaris into the hills, sunset catamarans from the marina and long lunches in the Old Town: what each one is really like, what it costs, and where to book.

The shortlist

The seven Albufeira does best.

First visit or fifth, these are the ones people come home talking about: the cave cruise everyone photographs, a half-day safari into the hills, the sunset sailing that turns into dinner. Booked well, they make the week.

The big day out

The Algarve you drove past on the way in.

A jeep leaves the resort behind for cork forest, red-dirt tracks and whitewashed villages a hire car never finds. Most runs pause for a distillery tasting or a hilltop view, and the half-days are back in time for the beach. This is the day trip that surprises people most.

In the water

Get properly wet.

A kayak or paddleboard slips into the coves and grottoes the big boats can only pass, and from sea level the cliffs are a different coast. Want speed instead? A jet ski safari or a parasail lift sorts that out. These are the ones worth getting salty for.

Past the promenade

There is a country behind the beach.

A few minutes inland the resort noise fades to vineyards, orange groves and stone villages. Book a winery afternoon with tapas, a tuk-tuk loop of the Old Town, or a long lunch matched to local wine. These are the trips that make the coast make sense.

Into the hills

Silves was the Moorish capital.

Long before the beach resorts there was Silves, its red sandstone castle still standing above an orange-grove river. Push on and Monchique climbs into cool green hills with a spa town and a firewater worth trying. It is the calmest, oldest day this coast has to offer.

Around Albufeira

The good pockets of Albufeira.

Albufeira splits into a handful of pockets. The Old Town for lanes and late dinners. The Marina for the boats out. Falésia and Oura for the sand. And the hills behind for everything the postcards miss.

What to book

Every kind of Albufeira trip.

Further afield

The rest of the Algarve is close.

Albufeira sits right in the middle of the Algarve, which makes it a fine base for a day out. West to the gold cliffs of Lagos and the edge of the map at Sagres, inland to Silves and the Monchique hills, east to the market towns and lagoon islands, each an easy morning away.
